This source must be focused on for the data is astounding…I will let you take it in…
The number of live births in Iceland in 2021 was 4,879, an increase from 2020 when 4,512 children were born. Only three times before have more live-born children been born in one year, in the years 2009-2010 and 1960. A total of 2,576 boys and 2,303 girls were born, which is equivalent to 1,119 boys for every 1,000 girls.
Stillbirths increased in 2021 by 8 from the previous year. In 2020, there were 9 stillbirths and 17 in 2021. Stillbirths per 1,000 live births increased from 2.0 to 3.5 between years. You need to look back to 2004 to get the same number as in 2021.
The average stillbirth per 1000 live children for the last nine years (2011-2020) is 2 per 1000. The increase is therefore 75% compared to the average of the last nine years before that.
Stillbirths are those babies who come into the world without a sign of life after reaching 28 weeks of pregnancy.
The increase in perinatal mortality is 82% in 2021 compared to the average of the previous nine years before that. Perinatal death is the sum of stillbirths and children who die within a week of birth out of a total of 1,000 births.
Neonatal mortality is the mortality rate of children before 28 days (out of 1,000 live births), where the increase is similar, or about 81% compared to the average of the last nine years before that.
The number of deaths in the first year increases by 100% compared to the average of the previous nine years.
Here you can see a graph of perinatal deaths (total stillbirths born and deaths within a week) for the years 2011 - 2021.
